Elluminate Upgrade to Version 9.6

Elluminate recently released a new version of Elluminate (version 9.6). We were using Elluminate 9.1 until the end of the fall 2009 semester. Elluminate 9.6 has several new features and we upgraded our servers to Elluminate 9.6 in December 2009. This upgrade will not affect your existing sessions, session links, Elluminate moderators login url, Blackboard integration, user records, and past recordings. The user interface will also remain the same with a few additional buttons and menu items that refer to the new features.

The only change you will notice is that when you and your students log in to a session after we have completed the upgrade, you will experience an increase in the time taken to download the software for Elluminate. This should not take long. However, if your students will be connecting by dial-up (slower Internet connection), they should be advised to log in early for the first session after the upgrade. Also, after the Elluminate session window opens you will notice a few interface changes which are mostly aesthetic. Click

for a quick look at what’s new in Elluminate 9.6.

To learn more about the new features in Elluminate 9.6 and for great moderator training in Elluminate 9.6, consider attending our workshops on Elluminate in the Fall and Spring semesters.
Go to http://www.cte.usf.edu/workshops/#synchronouselluminate to register for the workshop when the new schedule is posted (usually at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters). More details on the workshop are listed on the site.

Viewing Elluminate Recordings of Sessions Created via Blackboard

If your Elluminate session was created via Blackboard, you can access the recording using the same path via Blackboard that you used to join the session.

  1. First, log in to Blackboard at USF (http://my.usf.edu) using your USF netID and password.
  2. Click the Courses tab.
  3. Click your course’s link.
  4. Click the Course Tools link in the main navigation bar in your course.
  5. Scroll down and click the Elluminate Live link.
  6. On the Elluminate Live! Sessions page click the drop down menu and select Recorded Sessions.
  7. Click the Filter (magnifying glass) button.
  8. Use the Calendar on the right to select the day of the recording (click the day the recording was made).
  9. Click the recording link for the appropriate session after it appears.

The session will open using Java Web Start (the software used by Elluminate – visit http://www.elluminate.com/support if you do not have this free software).

Please note that session recordings will not appear soon after a live session ends. It takes between 2 (minimum) and 24 hours (maximum) for an Elluminate Session recording to show up in Blackboard.

Error: Navigation to this Page has been Cancelled

Recently we have seen several Elluminate users at USF complain about an error they receive in Internet Explorer 8 (and sometimes in version 7) when they try to access an Elluminate session or recording. This is actually an Internet Explorer security issue and can be easily resolved.

The Problem:
When you click on an Elluminate session/recording link from within Blackboard at USF, you get the following error:
Navigation Cancelled Error

The Solution:
The appearance of the error is usually due to a choice that you actually make while browsing through Blackboard. This might even have happened when you clicked on the Elluminate link. The dialog box where you made the choice is below:
Security Warning

This is a new security warning box in Internet Explorer 8. Microsoft has reversed the wording from previous browsers and most (sane) error messages. Most users will click YES to the above question since you mostly agree when asked about whether you would like to see content that is not completely secure or you have to allow a program to be launched, etc. However, this warning is reversed. If you say Yes, you are agreeing to only see securely delivered content. Most of the content presented by Blackboard and other applications like Elluminate is not securely delivered, it is only authenticated using your netID (Blackboard). So when you say Yes, it cancels navigation to the page and the page does not load unless you close the browser (and all windows) and go to the session in a new browser window and go through the process of getting into the session again and CLICK NO this time. Then you should see the next page. The best solution to this issue is to NOT use Internet Explorer whenever possible and use Firefox instead.
