Using Video and Video Recordings in Elluminate

We have noticed that several moderators are now using the video feature in Elluminate to project video of themselves and other presenters/participants. While video is a great addition to online sessions, it has been found that “talking head” video does not add much value to instruction. If you do decide to use video to personalize your sessions, you could do so for a short while and then turn off the video transmission after some time. Other, more productive, uses of video include its use for demonstrations, sessions with guest faculty, panel discussions, etc.

Additionally, when you record an Elluminate session, please note that the video transmission is also recorded. This can result in larger recording files which not only load our server, but also result in longer download times for viewers.

Limited Use Myths

Recently we heard from a faculty member who thought that he could never request any more Elluminate sessions because we had given out all 200 licenses. This is not true. Please continue to send in your requests for sessions.

200 concurrrent user licenses in Elluminate Academic (and 500 in Elluminate Lite) means that we can, at any time, have any 200 people using Elluminate Academic (500 using Elluminate Lite) on our servers. This does not mean that we give out 200 user accounts in Elluminate Academic (and 500 in Elluminate Lite) and we are done with after that and cannot support any more users. This simply means that when we have sessions using 200 seats (and 500 in Elluminate Lite) within a certain time, we cannot have any more sessions within that time frame. So please send in your requests for Elluminate sessions. If we cannot create a session in Elluminate Academic because all 200 seats are being used, we will inform you and offer the option of having the session in Elluminate Lite or at a different time, or we will try to work with the other faculty having sessions at the same time to see if they can reduce some of the seats in their sessions so that you may be able to have your session in Elluminate Academic. You can also proactively check to see seats are available at times you require by visiting our session calendars for Elluminate Academic (http://calendars.yahoo.com/usfelluminate) and Elluminate Lite (http://calendars.yahoo.com/usfelite) where we maintain session time and seat information.

Elluminate Academic and Elluminate Lite

We have noticed that several moderators are sometimes confused about the differences between Elluminate Academic and Elluminate Lite.

We would like to distinguish the two systems that we have at USF. We have both Elluminate Academic and Elluminate Lite at USF. Elluminate Academic is a full-featured virtual classroom system and Elluminate Lite is a scaled-down version of the same system. We have both systems at USF because we have limited seats in Elluminate Academic (200 concurrent users), and Elluminate Lite (500 concurrent user license) provides us with additional seats that we can use when requests exceed 200 concurrent users at peak times. Some of the features missing in Elluminate Lite include: recording, video conferencing, and application sharing.

For a complete comparison of features, visit: http://www.elluminate.com/product_comparison.jsp. If you request a session and we inform you that seats might not be available in Elluminate Academic for your session, you can always opt for seats in Elluminate Lite if it would work for you.

More Seat Licenses for Elluminate Academic!

Due to increased usage of Elluminate at USF and in an effort to meet the needs of USF faculty and students, we have purchased an additional 100 concurrent seat licenses for our full-featured Elluminate Academic system, giving us a total of 200 seats at any one time for scheduling sessions.

Note that this means that at any one time, there can be 200 different users accessing Elluminate Academic at USF. This is a considerable increase in the number of seats available.

Please remember to schedule your sessions through our synchronous session request page at http://www.c21te.usf.edu/sync/requests

Follow the brief 6-step process to request your Elluminate sessions.

Thank you for your continued use of Elluminate and for making it a popular instructional tool at USF.

What is Elluminate Lite?

Elluminate Lite is a scaled-down version of Elluminate Academic (the 200-concurrent seat full-featured version of Elluminate we have had at USF for the last 2 years). The reason we have Elluminate Lite at USF is to serve as a backup system for moderators and participants when we exceed the seat availability on Elluminate Academic. On certain days and certain times, we do exceed seat availability in Elluminate Academic. Additionally Elluminate Lite is available for those situations where session moderators require larger amounts of time and more frequent sessions and do not need all the features of Elluminate Academic.
